Terry Rozier – Boston Celtics

The Boston Celtics decided to use the 16th overall pick to select point guard Terry Rozier out of Louisville. Many mock drafts had Rozier falling to late in the first round, but the Celtics set their sights on Rozier and pulled the trigger when they were on the clock. That’s likely not going to be a good thing for Rozier.

Rozier’s bust potential starts with the fact that his NBA career is going to get underway with him being in a bad situation. That’s not to say that the Celtics are a dysfunctional team, but rather that there’s no obvious spot for Rozier on the roster. With Avery Bradley, Isaiah Thomas, and the Celtics’ lottery pick from last year in Marcus Smart, there’s seemingly no room for another point guard. No room for a point guard essentially leaves Rozier in the cold.

While an eventual change of scenery could remedy this issue for Rozier, there’s also the chance that his time in Boston could label him as nothing more than a guy on the end of the bench. If he’s never given opportunities in Boston, the break-in-case-of-emergency guard could be the role he’s expected to fill even if he is sent elsewhere.

Even if Rozier does somehow emerge from the Celtics’ logjam at guard, he’s not NBA-ready at this point. His ability as a decision-maker, consistent perimeter shooter, and finisher all need work as he makes the jump to the NBA. If he were to get time right now, he’d likely be eaten alive.

Rozier isn’t a hopeless prospect, but this seems like the perfect storm of a player being drafted too high and being put into a less-than-ideal situation. Given how it looks his career is going to start, the chances of success for Rozier are unlikely at this point.
