Constructing an all-time MLB Home Run Derby lineup
Trying to follow in his father’s footsteps, Ken Griffey Jr. exceeded all expectations. The center fielder was one of the greatest to ever play that position and there were too many highlight reel plays to even count.
While he was a stellar defender, he was even better with his bat, breaking out as a superstar in his second big league season in 1990 — he was also named to his first career All-Star Game that season.
The 13-time All-Star was one of the most prolific hitters of all time during his 22-year career and he finished with 630 career homers. Most of his big home run seasons came before the 2001 campaign, however, as he hit over 30 just two more times from 2001-2010.
Looking back at his days with the Seattle Mariners, Griffey Jr. was hitting the ball out of the park at an early age, winning his first Home Run Derby at the age of 25 and then going on to win two more in 1998 and 1999.
In fact, Griffey Jr. has the most Home Run Derby titles since the contest started in 1985 and you can’t leave a guy off the list who dominated during his playing days.
Let’s be honest, though, Griffey Jr. could probably still compete in a Home Run Derby at the age of 45.
