Newly minted Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson will be gracing the cover of FIFA 16 along with Barcelona legend Lionel Messi.

The passing of the torch in the world of soccer took a another the step into the future, as Liverpool star Jordan Henderson killed two birds in one morning.

Liverpool’s golden boy was named the new captain of his squad, taking over for the departed Steven Gerrard who is retiring to play in the MLS for the LA Galaxy. That wasn’t the only good news for Henderson on Friday, as not long after he was named the captain of Liverpool, he was named as the new cover athlete for FIFA 16.

Henderson will be joining Barcelona legend Lionel Messi on the cover of the most popular sports video game in the world.

EA Sports made the announcement on Twitter early on Friday morning, just in time to make some buzz at Comic-Con for the sports-centric fans there.

Henderson is the golden boy for Liverpool, and will try to follow in the great footsteps of Stevie G at Anfield — which is no easy task. But fans are confident he can carry the team and be the next great legend to come through the club.

As far as his global appeal, being on the cover of FIFA 16 is certainly not going to hurt. It could be interpreted that this cover is a nudge in the direction of Henderson taking over for Messi as the cover athlete of the future for FIFA, but only time will tell if he’s worthy.
