There aren’t many days in Major League Baseball that go by without Andrew McCutchen doing something pretty incredible. Even with the league’s best on the field for the 2015 MLB All-Star Game, McCutchen still found a way to shine to start the bottom of the sixth inning.
With the National League trailing 3-1, McCutchen saw and liked the first pitch that he received from Chris Archer and promptly put it well over the left field wall:
McCutchen was the leadoff man in the lineup for the National League, meaning that now both he and Mike Trout—the leadoff man for the American League—both homered in the same All-Star Game. During the broadcast, the commentators said that this was only the second time both leadoff men homered in the same game, the other time happening in 1965.
While the fans in Cincinnati may not always have an appreciation for a division rival like McCutchen, there’s no denying the greatness of the Pittsburgh Pirates centerfielder. Despite his struggles to start the season, let’s hope this home run in the All-Star Game is a sign of more impressive things to come for McCutchen in the second half of the season.
