MLB Trade Deadline 2015: 5 moves that must happen
The Chicago Cubs are on the verge of making their first playoff appearance since 2008, but have still not found somebody to shut the door consistently in the ninth inning. The Philadelphia Phillies are nowhere near playoff contention, and their closer, Jonathan Papelbon, is infuriated with the situation.
It only makes sense for the Phillies to send their disgruntled reliever to the Cubs.
Papelbon has listed the Cubs as a preferred destination, and the team’s ace, Jon Lester, believes his former Red Sox teammate would be a great fit in Chicago.
"“When you’ve been playing good and you get an addition, all of a sudden you just get that extra boost,” Lester told CSN Chicago. “Even in ’13, we got Jake Peavy (for Boston’s World Series run) and no one really thought that was going to really help us. But I think when you bring in character guys, it can give you that boost in the clubhouse and on the field.”"
The Cubs already have one of the best pitching staffs in the MLB, and adding a six-time All-Star in Papelbon would be a huge boost for a team that currently holds the final wildcard spot in the National League. With the San Fransisco Giants and New York Mets right on their heels, it would be wise to make a move to improve their team for the final stretch of the season.
With the Cubs’ uncertainty at the closer role, trading for Papelbon is a no-brainer.
