SP. Detroit Tigers. David Price. 1. player. 63.

At the beginning of the year, if I told you that David Price would be on the trade block, you probably would have looked at me like I had never watched baseball in my life.

The Detroit Tigers‘ ace is basically all they have left in a decimated rotation that has taken a beating this year. Shane Greene has been a failed experiment, Justin Verlander has been pitiful since returning from injury and Alfredo Simon is basically a guaranteed five earned run per outing starter.

Anibal Sanchez is the only guy in the rotation that has really showed signs of a turnaround after a horrid first half of the year.

Price has been dominant, however, posting a 9-3 record with a 2.32 ERA and 127 strikeouts. Basically, he has been Cy Young-worthy for a team that has been struggling to stay afloat since the first month of the year.

Detroit looked like a serious contender early and even into the beginning of June, but a recent poor stretch, pushing its record to 45-46, may have caused general manager Dave Dombrowski to face reality: this may not be the Tigers’ year.

Selling at the trade deadline may be a possibility for the team from the Motor City for the first time in a decade and Price would be at the top of the list for guys who could have a huge return on investment.

The 29-year-old’s contract is up at the end of the year, so this may be very possible.

Long gone are the days when you saw a Tigers rotation with a solid Justin Verlander, MVP candidate Max Sherzer, ERA leader Anibal Sanchez and David Price at the same time.
