Afternoon Lineup

SP-David Price-Detroit Tigers: Price has at least seven strikeouts in four of his last five starts and fanned 12 in his last outing while allowing just one run on six hits but still taking a hard-luck loss.  On the season, he has a 1.11 WHIP and has been especially effective in day games going 2-0 with a 2.03 ERA in his seven daytime starts striking out 53 in 48.2 innings.

SP-Garrett Richards-Los Angeles Angels: Richards has also been dominant lately and is coming off a complete game shutout in his last start which came against the Red Sox. Richards is 6-1 with a 1.89 ERA at home and 3-3 with a 2.77 ERA in daytime starts.  The way the Angels offense is rolling, too, Richards is a nice play if you can work him and Price under your salary cap and still put together a lineup you’re happy with.

C-Stephen Vogt-Oakland Athletics: Catcher on day games after night games is always tricky, so I tent to go with reliable options that can play other positions if they don’t catch like Vogt. Vogt went 2-4 yesterday in the A’s win over Toronto and is 4-18 since the All Star break having hit safely in five of his last six games.

1B-Chris Davis-Baltimore Orioles: Davis homered last night and is not 6-21 since the All Star break having hit safely in all five games since the break. Davis is only 1-6 against Masahiro Tanaka in his career, but he is hitting .296 with nine of his 20 homers coming during daytime contests.

2B-Robinson Cano-Seattle Mariners

3B-Josh Donaldson-Toronto Blue Jays

SS-J.J. Hardy-Baltimore Orioles: Hardy is a solid value play at shortstop give his 5-17 (.294) start to the second half of the season. He is 1-3 in his career against Tanaka and 5-21 with a homer this year at Yankee Stadium.

OF-Yoenis Cespedes-Detroit Tigers

OF-Kole Calhoun-Los Angeles Angels: Calhoun went 3-4 in last night’s win over the Twins which was the Angels’ seventh in a row.  Since the All Star break, Calhoun is 9-20 (.450) with a double, three home runs, and six RBI.

OF-Franklin Gutierrez-Seattle Mariners: This value outfield play is subject to change, but Gutierrez has come back strong this month going 9-30 (.300) with two doubles and two homers.  If he gets the start against David Price, he’ll be a solid play at a cheap price.
