The Arizona Diamondbacks are out of the running for Aroldis Chapman, seemingly making way for the Astros to swoop in.

When the MLB Trade Deadline hits, the frenzy is usually insane. Not only are contenders getting in on landing the players they think they need but there are other teams who get in on the trades who probably don’t need to. That’s where the Arizona Diamondbacks fell at the deadline, as they tried to make a move for a closer who wouldn’t help them make a run at the postseason.

Arizona’s interest in Chapman was interesting to hear of, but with the D-Backs dropping out the running it appears the Houston Astros are going to step up and further bolster their roster.

According to Bob Nightengale from USA Today Sports, the Diamondbacks are now completely out of the running for Arolis Chapman and the Astros appear to be making room to land him before the deadline passes.

The Astros added Scott Kazmir before the deadline arrived, and went on to add Carlos Gomez to their outfield. Adding Chapman to their bullpen as a closer or a setup man could help Houston get deep into the postseason if they can close out games in the seventh inning. That’s where Chapman comes into play, and he’d be an interesting acquisition — but not one that guarantees anything at all.

Houston has bought big at the deadline, a surprise we wouldn’t have believed at the beginning of the season. Chapman would be a nice addition to the Astros contending roster but he’s not something they need to buy on right now.
