NFL preseason 2015: Players with most to prove
San Diego Chargers – Melvin Ingram
Why is he the pick?
Last year, the Chargers were only able to muster 26 sacks as a team. To put that in perspective, division-rival Justin Houston had 22 by himself. Part of the reason that San Diego could not get a consistent pass-rush was the lack of Ingram, who only played in four games before going down with a season-ending hip injury. Ingram was good before getting hurt, notching four sacks in as many games.
General manager Tom Telesco did not address the position much at all in the offseason, hoping that Ingram can come back and make an impact. Since being made a first-round pick in 2012, Ingram only has six sacks but flashed that aforementioned promise in 2014. If Ingram can finally stay healthy and flash his full array of skills, it would be a massive boost for the Chargers.
What is at stake?
San Diego’s defensive ability. The Chargers have a good secondary with Jason Verrett and Brandon Flowers on the corners with Eric Weddle at safety. However, they can only cover so long. If Ingram can’t get consistent pressure on opposing quarterbacks, this defense could completely unravel. There is not much else in the front seven outside of Corey Liuget, so Ingram must make strides.
