NFL preseason 2015: Players with most to prove
New York Giants – Ereck Flowers
Why is he the pick?
Originally, Flowers was going to be the right tackle after being picked in the first round by general manager Jerry Reese. However, an offseason pectoral injury to Will Beatty has changed those plans, with Flowers now projected to watch the blindside of Eli Manning. Flowers was a left tackle at the University of Miami (FL), but there have been concerns about his ability to handle speed.
Flowers needs to be part of the solution for head coach Tom Coughlin. Last year’s offensive line was nothing short of horrific, with injuries and poor play dotting the landscape. The Giants have struggled to protect Manning since winning Super Bowl XLVI, putting the spotlight even more on Flowers.
What is at stake?
Coughlin’s job. New York is not going to win anything of note unless Flowers can step in and do the job immediately. The hope is that Beatty returns sometime later in the year and Flowers can then kick over to the right side, replacing Marshall Newhouse. The Giants have not made the playoffs since 2011, and with Coughlin being the oldest coach in the league, he needs to get it done now.
