New York Jets – Geno Smith

Why is he the pick?

This is pretty much a no-brainer. Smith is one of the more important figures in the 2015 season. If the former West Virginia University star can figure out the NFL in his third campaign and stop turning the ball over so much, the Jets could be a playoff team. If he continues to rifle interceptions at an alarming pace, he is going to ruin any hopes for happiness in New York.

There is reason to be hopeful for Jets fans. In his rookie year, Smith completed 55.8 percent of his throws for 3,046 yards and 12 touchdowns with 21 interceptions. Last year, Smith’s completion percentage rose to 59.7 with 13 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. While his yardage total dropped down to 2,525, his yards per attempt was the exact same at 6.88.

What is at stake?

His future with New York. If Smith can’t beat out Ryan Fitzpatrick in the preseason, it is likely the end of the road for this kid. Smith would have one year remaining on his rookie deal, but would new head coach Todd Bowles be looking to hitch his wagon to Smith? Probably not. This is the big chance for Smith to step up. If he can’t it is probably free agency in 2017.
