10 best MLB waiver trades since 2000
Luis Sojo was never an All-Star, but he proved himself to be a reliable utility infielder during a four-year stint with the New York Yankees from 1996-1999. Less than one season after leaving for Pittsburgh in free agency, the Yankees acquired Sojo once again by trading relief pitcher Chris Spurling to the Pirates.
Spurling never appeared in a game with his new team, and while Sojo was not a big loss to Pittsburgh by any means, he was of great value for the Yankees during their 2000 World Series run.
Chuck Knoblauch’s struggles at second base thrust Sojo into the starting lineup at the end of the regular season, and the 35-year-old would hit .288 with two home runs in 34 games. It was his clutch hitting during the postseason, though, that would secure his place in Yankees history.
Solo only took 10 at-bats in the 2000 playoffs, but he made the most of them. He recorded four hits, with none bigger than the one that he delivered in Game 5 of the World Series.
With the game tied at two in the top of the ninth inning, Sojo stepped to the plate with two outs. The veteran infielder connected for a two-run single that clinched a World Series victory for the Yankees.
