Jeff Conine experienced his best statistical years with the Florida Marlins during his first three seasons in the big leagues. During this time he hit 55 home runs, drove in 266 runs and recorded a batting average above .300, while appearing in two All-Star Games.

It was during his return to the team in 2003, however, in which he would make his greatest impact.

On August 31st, the organization acquired Conine from the Baltimore Orioles in exchange for pitchers Denny Bautista and Don Levinski. Considering their cleanup hitter, third baseman Mike Lowell, suffered a broken bone to his hand the day before, trading for a reliable corner infielder, who was beloved by the fans, was a no-brainer for Florida.

Conine struggled throughout the final month of the season, but none of that would matter once October arrived.

He would hit .367 throughout the postseason, including a .458, three-RBI, one-home run performance during a thrilling seven-game series with the Chicago Cubs. The Marlins would capture their second World Series title in team history that year.

Conine was a part of both World Series victories, ranks second in franchise history in games played and is third on the team’s all-time hit list – all good enough to earn him the nickname of “Mr. Marlin.”
