18: San Diego Padres

ACQUIRED: LHP Mark Rzepczynski (from Indians)

TRADED: OF Abraham Almonte (to Indians)

If this was a pure ranking based only on the moves by the team at the deadline, the Padres would rate dead last. After a winter of action from general manager A.J. Preller, many thought the Padres would be wheeling and dealing after a season filled with disappointment and a 6.5 game deficit in the Wild Card race.

The Padres had some intriguing pieces to move, chief among them Justin Upton. However, the availability of Carlos Gomez and Yoenis Cespedes coupled with the struggles of Upton in July doomed San Diego to being unable to move their impending free agent. Instead, they focused on possibly trading controllable assets in Tyson Ross and Craig Kimbrel, but still were not able to get anything done.

San Diego can still move Upton during the waiver period, and could also look for a suitor for James Shields, but it feels like a missed opportunity for a team that had more to gain than any other team in the market. They had the right pieces to move but somewhere something broke down.

Sounds an awful lot like their season in general.
