9: Chicago Cubs

ACQUIRED: RHP Dan Haren (from Marlins), RHP Tommy Hunter (from Orioles), LHP Clayton Richard (from Pirates), LHP Manuel Rondon (from Angels)

TRADED: OF Junior Lake (to Orioles), C Rafael Lopez (to Angels), SS Elliot Soto (to Marlins), RHP Ivan Pineyro (to Cubs)

The Cubs have a ton of motivation to succeed in 2015, especially given the fact that they chased and landed Jon Lester as a sign that their future is now. With the influx of top prospects in the Major League roster, they aren’t far off and declaring the present as the time to go for it isn’t a bad decision.

However, the Cubs went into the deadline with some interesting decisions to make and decided to focus their efforts on chasing pitching. I found that dubious to say the least, considering that the offense has been the biggest weakpoint thus far in 2015. Instead, they focused on chasing Cole Hamels, Tyson Ross, and Craig Kimbrel and not landing any of them.

Of the players they did pull in, the addition of Dan Haren is admirable. He’s consistent and will help the backend of the rotation. Plus, he didn’t cost the team immensely and will be a free agent, giving the Cubs the ability to chase after the David Price and Johnny Cuetos of the free agent market this winter.
