5: New York Yankees

ACQUIRED: 2B/OF Dustin Ackley (from Mariners)

TRADED: RHP Jose Ramirez (to Mariners), OF Ramon Florez (to Mariners)

The New York Yankees entered the MLB Trade Deadline with the second-biggest division lead in baseball, but they were hardly a sure thing either. Questions about C.C. Sabathia pitching into the postseason, injuries to Ivan Nova and Michael Pineda, and the presence of Brian Mitchell in the rotation made many feel the Yankees would be in on one of the big pitching names on the market.

However, like the Dodgers, Brian Cashman drew a line in the sand around the team’s top-four prospects and would not include any of Luis Severino, Aaron Judge, Jorge Mateo, or Greg Bird in any deals. That quickly dropped them out on the like of Hamels and Price, and they were never in a position to complete with Kansas City for Johnny Cueto either.

Instead, they watched the second-place Blue Jays build up for a playoff push behind them, knowing that they play Toronto 13 more times before the end of the season and did nothing of consequence. Yes, they finally addressed their issues at second base, but did so by acquiring underachieving Dustin Ackley.

The Yankees came away from the deadline thinking they should have done more and likely should have.
