Power Ranking each MLB team in aftermath of Trade Deadline
27: Colorado Rockies
ACQUIRED: SS Jose Reyes (from Blue Jays), RHP Jeff Hoffman (from Blue Jays), RHP Miguel Castro (from Blue Jays), RHP Jesus Tinoco (from Blue Jays)
TRADED: SS Troy Tulowitzki (to Blue Jays), RHP LaTroy Hawkins (to Blue Jays)
The Colorado Rockies have had a long-standing appointment with the bottom of the standings for a few seasons now, and the 2015 season hasn’t done much to change that impression. Much of that has been due to the team’s inability to develop pitching that can withstand the terrors of Coors Field.
They addressed that in spades at the deadline.
One item that has prevented them from fixing the pitching situation, albeit without putting a dome over the stadium, was the albatross contract of Troy Tulowitzki hanging around the neck of ownership. For a team in a small market, $20 million-plus a season is a big chunk of change for one player, especially a shortstop. Granted, Tulowitzki is the best in the game, but it handcuffed the team immensely.
By swinging Tulowitzki in a trade to the Toronto Blue Jays, the Rockies received one of the best pitching prospects in the game in Jeff Hoffman and two incredibly high ceiling arms in Miguel Castro and Jesus Tinoco. Hoffman enters the team’s top prospect list at #4, Castro at #10, and Tinoco at #18. If you’re keeping track at home, those are three top-20 prospects and salary relief. Oh, and they also got a capable shortstop in Jose Reyes in return.
