Resources

The Yankees have all sorts of resources they can turn to if they need it. They elected not to give up their top prospects for Cole Hamels or David Price, but it doesn’t mean they can’t make a move at some point this month to help bolster a part of their roster.

If James Shields becomes available, he could be a target. Maybe the Marlins put Martin Prado out on waivers. The Yankees are already paying some of his salary anyway, may as well try and bring him back into the fold. The Yankees have enough money where they wouldn’t have to worry if they wanted to add a piece or two through a waiver trade.

If New York doesn’t want to go out and trade for a guy, they can add from within. Luis Severino made his major league debut Wednesday night and looked fairly impressive, tossing five innings of 2-run ball and striking out seven along the way. They didn’t want to trade him and after dominating through AA and AAA they might as well use him to help the major league team to supplement a rotation beset by injuries.

But there’s more.

If the Yankees want to add add let’s say a second baseman, they could bring Rob Refsnyder back up. If they need an outfielder, Slade Heathcott could come back or they could bring up top prospect Aaron Judge.

The last spot in the bullpen has been a revolving door, as the Yankees have used multiple pitchers in that spot. It’s something that can continue to serve them well as they continue to add fresh bodies down the stretch. They also have former All-Star Andrew Bailey in AAA that they could bring up to help set up for Betances and Miller.
