Five Reasons the New York Mets could win the World Series

The pen is mightier
The crosstown Yankees get a lot of pub for a great bullpen but, if you look at the numbers, the Mets pen is pretty good too.
The Mets bullpen ERA is 2.96 which is sixth in all of baseball. Opponents are hitting just .224 against them, which is fifth in baseball. This is without getting a lot of strikeouts – they rank 29th with 276 of them.
Since Jenrry Mejia’s first suspension, Jeurys Familia has done a fantastic job, saving over 30 games in his first year as a closer. Tyler Clippard was brought in before the trade deadline to setup for Familia. He was the A’s closer this year, so if Familia needs a day Clippard can be that guy.
Eric O’Flaherty was just added from the left side after Alex Torres proved ineffective and Jerry Blevins broke the same spot in his arm.
Hansel Robles has adjusted to a role in the bullpen nicely. After putting together an impressive July, he’s struggled a little bit in August.
Of course in a short series you can add Steven Matz, Bartolo Colon or Jon Niese to give more depth – along with Goeddel and Montero coming back sooner or later. The Mets have a ton of options to shorten games in October. As you saw with the Kansas City Royals last year, a highly effective bullpen can help carry you to the World Series.
