Texas-Texas A&M (Home and Home)

Here’s a question for you: Is it really a complete football season without the Texas-Texas A&M rivalry game? The answer, compadres, is a resounding no.

It inexcusable that this game is no more. A flat out embarrassment that Greg Sankey (and Mike Slive before him) and Bob Bowlsby, Bill Bowlsby and Michael K. Young, Bill Byrne and Steve Patterson, Charlie Strong and Kevin Sumlin … whoever … can’t/won’t figure it out.

Now is the absolute perfect time to rekindle one of college athletics’ most iconic rivalries. If the College Football Playoff Selection Committee showed us anything last year it’s that high-profile games (even if they’re “quality losses”) matter.  Especially with the Big 12 getting jobbed in 2014, you’d think that having the league’s premier team square off against its long-lost rival, who just so happens to be a member of the vaunted SEC West, would be low-hanging fruit.

A home and home would be fun, simply because of history. But having this in, say, JerryWorld would be awesome. It’s inconceivable that A&M is opening this season in a game billed as the “Texas Kickoff” (at NRG Stadium in Houston) and it’s not against the Longhorns. Likewise, Texas has two high-profile out-of-conference match-ups (Notre Dame, California), yet neither is TAMU.

Texas is working to reclaim its spot among the college football elite. TAMU is scraping and clawing to assert its dominance in a log-jammed SEC West. For the first time in a long while, both are on an even plane – the time is now. Lock Reveille and Bevo in a room and make this happen.
