28. Brian Urlacher
The Chicago Bears have been known for their superior defense, labeled the “Monsters of the Midway.” Linebacker Brian Urlacher carried that tradition forward during his stint with the Bears. Urlacher and Ray Lewis arguably defined the middle linebacker position during their generation, both mind-boggling mobile and quick allowing them to make plays all over the field and both hitting opponents like a ton of bricks.
Over the course of his career Urlacher went to the Pro Bowl nine times and was a First Team All-Pro on four different occassions. Urlacher was also named the 2005 NFL Defensive Player of the Year.
Urlacher set Bears records for tackles in a season and over the length of a career. Urlacher’s 182 games in the NFL, all but two of which he started, trail only Walter Payton and Olin Kreutz in the Bears record books.
Urlacher recorded 1,040 tackles, 41.5 sacks, 22 interceptions, 16 fumble recoveries and 11 forced fumbles.[63]
Urlacher’s closest call with a Super Bowl ring came during the 2006 season when the Bears met the Colts in the title game. Unfortunately for the Bears, Peyton Manning won his first and only Super Bowl to date. If only Urlacher’s teams had a more serviceable quarterback than Rex Grossman during his career, he might not be on this list.
