29 greatest NFL players to never win a Super Bowl
By Mike Dyce
23. Earl Campbell
Earl Campbell, aka the Tyler Rose, is one of the best power running backs in the history of the NFL. When Campbell retired he had 9,704 yards and 74 touchdowns, solid and impressive numbers that don’t do Campbell’s punishing running style justice the way a highlight reel would.
Campbell was a five-time Pro Bowl selection and a three-time All-Pro. Campbell was also named the NFL MVP in 1979, one of his first seasons in the league. Campbell led the league in rushing for three straight seasons between 1978 and 1980. Campbell was enshrined into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1991, the Houston Oilers/Tennessee Titans retiring his No. 34 jersey.
Campbell sniffed Super Bowl success twice, reaching the AFC Championship Game with the Oilers in 1978 and 1979. In both those games they ran into the team of the 70s, the dominant Pittsburgh Steelers. They lost both games to the Steelers, who went on to win their third and fourth Super Bowls of the decade.
Both those campaigns came early in his season, Campbell struggling to lead a team deep in the playoffs for the remainder of his career.
