The Angels were busy in July and added outfielders David DeJesus, David Murphy and Shane Victorino in an attempt to boost the offensive production the team was getting from its outfield – Mike Trout notwithstanding. As we mentioned earlier, that doesn’t mean the club doesn’t want to add another outfield bat, and Marlon Byrd fits that profile. Acquiring a second baseman would also be nice, which is why getting Brandon Phillips from the Reds also makes sense. However, there are other options if that trade doesn’t work out.

The Angels are expected to pursue Philadelphia Phillies second baseman Chase Utley, along with a handful of other teams including the San Francisco Giants. Utley makes sense for both clubs and should get plenty of playing time in either city, and would therefore likely waive his trade clause.

And, the Angels may have a few more interesting minor league options, plus deeper pockets, than the Giants. Kaleb Cowart has been tearing the cover off the ball in 58 games in Triple-A (.330/.402/.512, 6 home runs) and regained his status as a prospect after struggling through 51 games in the Class-A California League (.242/.326/.387). With the Phillies looking for big league ready players, the 2010 first rounder makes a lot of sense. Triple-A second baseman Alex Yarbrough is another option if the Angels don’t want to part with Cowart.
