One waiver trade deadline deal every MLB team should make
It’s nice to be the best team in baseball. With a record of 75-41 and a six-game lead in the National League Central, the St. Louis Cardinals are cruising towards the postseason once again. After adding first baseman/outfielder Brandon Moss from Cleveland and relievers Jonathan Broxton and Steve Cishek from Milwaukee and Miami, respectively, in July, the Cardinals have already positioned themselves very well for October.
However, in this exercise, every team must make a trade. Therefore, the best thing the Cardinals could do is add a backup catcher to replace Tony Cruz. Yadier Molina will catch every game in the playoffs anyway, but should something happen to the game’s best defensive backstop, it would be nice to get a little more production than the .184/.215/.211 slash Cruz has posted in 43 games this season.
A.J. Pierzynski would be a nice option, though a Welington Castillo or Jarrod Saltalamacchia of the Diamondbacks would work also. If Castillo passed through waivers, he would be of additional benefit because of his time with the Chicago Cubs, should the two clubs meet in the offseason.
