58-57, 4 GB NL East. 9 GB NL Wild Card. Washington Nationals. 30. player. 90.

The Washington Nationals could use outfield depth to help them get ready to joust with the New York Mets for the top spot in the NL East in September. And if they don’t make a move soon, it could be too late to make up the 4.5-game deficit in the standings.

Among the prospects Washington would be willing to part with to get such a deal done could be outfielder Brian Goodwin. Once one of the top prospects in the organization, the 2011 first rounder is 24 years old and has hit just .219/.283/.339 with seven home runs through 92 games for Double-A Harrisburg this season – a level he reached in his first professional season in 2012.

A change of scenery could help Goodwin, and if the Nats can land a big league outfielder for him, both sides would benefit. The only problem – and it’s a big one – is that Goodwin is a member of Washington’s 40-man roster. He may have signed for $3 million in 2012, but he carries only a cheap minor league salary now and plenty of potential– which would make him a likely candidate to be claimed by another team.

If the Nationals couldn’t include Goodwin in a deal for Venable, then perhaps relievers Nick Lee and Jake Johansen would be available.
