The Red Sox are well versed in making trades in August. Just three years ago, Boston executed one of the biggest blockbusters ever by sending Adrian Gonzalez, Carl Crawford, Josh Beckett and Nick Punto to the Los Angeles Dodgers. Unfortunately, the prospects the Red Sox got in return have not panned out and the club is once again looking to unload big contracts that pass through waivers.

Mike Napoli was the first to go this August when the veteran first baseman was shipped to Texas for a player to be named later. As for the rest of the roster, Hanley Ramirez and Pablo Sandoval have huge contracts that few teams would be interested in taking on, so the Sox would need to find a partner like the 2012 Dodgers with pockets deep enough to take on such a salary commitment. But it will be difficult to find a taker for either at this point in the season.

Therefore, someone like outfielder Alejandro De Aza may be a candidate that doesn’t factor into the club’s immediate plans but would still get a nice return.

Because of his speed on the base paths and his recent strong performance at the plate, a lot of teams would like to add De Aza to their bench for October. Oddly enough, the Orioles – who traded De Aza to Boston earlier this season – could use him now. But since we already projected the O’s to grab Jeff Francoeur, we’ll say De Aza lands in the National League instead and the Nationals would be a great fit.

Expect Boston to try and get a pitching prospect, or possibly an under the radar future first baseman like 26-year old Matt Skole.
