AL Rookie of the Year

  1. Carlos Correa, SS Houston Astros – We’re at the point now where Correa may be the Rookie of the Year even if he was in the National League, and that is crazy given that he has appeared in only 60 games. The 20-year-old (!) boasts a .286/.358/.532 slash line with 14 home runs and 10 stolen bases this season, and his 146 wRC+ would place him 12th among all qualified MLB players. In short, this is turning into a runaway.
  2. Nate Karns, SP Tampa Bay Rays – Karns easily leads AL rookies in innings pitched (130) and given that he has been productive with that workload (3.53 ERA), that is a strong profile. He has battled the home run ball all season, allowing 1.11 HR per 9 innings, but aside from those struggles, Karns has been a strong part of Tampa Bay’s rotation.
  3. Roberto Osuna, RP Toronto Blue Jays – It is a rare that a closer, especially one that just won the job recently, would be featured here, but the dearth of candidates makes it possible. Still, Osuna has been quite good in his own right, with a 2.01 ERA and more than a strikeout per inning at the tender age of 20. His upside is enormous, and Toronto appears to have picked the right arm for the ninth inning.
