10. Chicago Cubs

OK, so the Chicago Cubs also rely too much on their blue top alternates. But unlike most teams, they adhere to a strict policy of only wearing them on the road. Jake Arrieta always wears the blue top (unless his hand is forced by the opposing home starter). The same is true of Kyle Hendricks, and new starter Dan Haren who wore the blue top in his first Cubs start, and this past Sunday at U.S. Cellular Field.

Jason Hammel, however, generally goes gray. He normally goes with the “CUBS” gray (though not as much lately), whereas Jon Lester usually goes with the “Chicago” gray. Yes, the Cubs have two gray tops in addition to the blue top, all as road options.

The Cubs’ three main uniforms of years before are all great, but the “CUBS” gray needs to be banished. It made its debut a year ago, and was instantly despised by most Cubs fans.

The home white blue pinstripes with blue numbers and blue name plates is as solid as any uniform in baseball. And thankfully it’s the only look the Cubs sport at home, save for a rare throwback on special occasions.

The Cubs famously rely on tradition, though that tradition is constantly being updated (see the upgrades being made at Wrigley Field).

It is a bit surprising they’ve become so reliant on the blue tops on the road. But I have to respect giving the starting pitcher the option to choose his jersey of choice, even if I often don’t like the outcome.
