David Oyelowo brings us one step closer to a black James Bond

The world is waiting for the first black actor to play James Bond, and we’ve gotten one step closer to that with David Oylowo stepping into the role.

Ever since the topic was first brought up prior to Skyfall and in quieter circles before that, the world has been anticipating when a black actor will be cast as James Bond. It’s a surprisingly hot and controversial topic among fans, as some just can’t handle the idea of a non-white actor playing Bond. But the backwards thinking had best be corrected, as we’re one step closer to getting a black James Bond in the future.

Emmy-Nominated actor David Oyelowo has been given the job of narrating the audiobook for the upcoming Bond novel Trigger Mortis.

An ecstatic Oyelowo told the world that he’s the new James Bond — of audiobooks.

"“I am officially the only person on planet Earth who can legitimately say: ‘I am the new James Bond’ – even saying that name is the cinematic equivalent of doing the ‘to be or not to be’ speech.”"

This isn’t the first time that a black actor has played James Bond in some format. Hugh Quarshie read the audiobook for Dr. No, meaning the honors of the first black James Bond must go to him. However, the hiring of Oyelowo to narrate the book and by default play Bond is a step in the right direction and brings us that much closer to actually seeing it on screen.

With the current Bond franchise twice rebooted now with Daniel Craig, it’s hard to see a smooth transition to a black actor playing Bond, but that didn’t stop us from having a Aussie play Bond after Sean Connery — and George Lazenby is considered one of the best Bonds that we’ve had.

The whole stink about a black actor playing Bond is stupid, and the case in point being no one will know Oyelowo’s skin color as they’re listening to him narrate Trigger Mortis, which is the death nail in any argument against such a thing happening.
