NFL’s 30 best teams that didn’t win the Super Bowl
This team will always be remembered as Dan Marino’s only real chance to win a Super Bowl. In only Marino’s second season, the Dolphins were a legitimate threat to win it all thanks to his magical right arm, the tandem of Mark Duper and Mark Clayton, and the Killer B’s on defense. With Hall of Fame coach Don Shula on the sideline, this group was loaded.
In the regular season, Marino set the league ablaze like nobody had ever seen. The University of Pittsburgh sensation threw for 5,084 yards and 48 touchdowns, two marks that stood well into the next century. Clayton had a monster year, catching 73 passes for 1,389 yards and a ridiculous 18 touchdowns. All of this helped Miami roll up a 14-2 record and home-field advantage.
In the postseason, the Dolphins avenged a 1983 playoff upset by smashing the Seattle Seahawks before toppling the Pittsburgh Steelers in the AFC Championship game. However, Marino would meet his match in Joe Montana and the San Francisco 49ers, who beat the Dolphins, 38-16, in Super Bowl XIX. Marino would never reach another Super Bowl.
