NFL Preview: Best and worst teams at each position
Quarterback
Best: Seattle Seahawks
It was quite tempting to place the New England Patriots here as the best quarterback group. Tom Brady is a known quantity, and when Jimmy Garoppolo opens the season for New England, we’ll know how far along he has developed. And although Aaron Rodgers gives the Packers the best starting quarterback in the league, their lack of depth at the position is hard to ignore.
In Seattle, backup Tarvaris Jackson is a proven spearhead for an NFL offense; combined with All-American golden boy Russell Spalding Wilson – an athlete so good he is undoubtedly constructed from a composite of various pieces of sporting equipment – the Seahawks collectively have the best leaders to conduct their offense.
Worst: New York Jets
At the opening of training camp, the Johnny Manziel, Josh McCown-led Cleveland Browns would have been a clear choice to have the worst quarterback unit. The Buffalo Bills quarterback situation also appears to be rapidly deteriorating, as E.J. Manuel and Matt Cassel look to be having a race to the bottom.
That was all before Geno Smith got punched in the face over $600, however. Now the Jets have the majestically bearded Ryan Fitzpatrick at quarterback, and with only rookie Bryce Petty and Jake Heaps behind him, the Jets offense quickly turns into the flimsiest in the league. If Smith can return and progress in year three – a proposition with no evidence of occurring – then maybe the Jets won’t be stuck here at the bottom.
