Robert Griffin III: Five potential trade destinations
By Dani Bostick
I’m surprised the 49ers will even need to make cuts this week to get down to 75 men since they have lost so many key players to disciplinary problems, early retirement, injury, and free agency. The 49ers need personnel. Period. They could take Griffin and use him as a punter, since they gave theirs away to the Browns (well, not literally, but it was a super-good deal for Cleveland). They could use him as a running back. Maybe a tackle. They just need warm bodies at this point.
Former head coach Jim Harbaugh was a difficult personality, so the 49ers might not be up to a potentially tense interpersonal dynamic if Griffin proves to be “difficult” as well. On the other hand, Griffin is not the first Washington Redskin to clash with owner Dan Snyder and be absolutely miserable with the team. He has taken a lot of blame for that toxic dynamic, but this is not the first toxic dynamic in Washington and Snyder could be the true root of the problem.
Seriously, though. It’s been rumored that quarterback Colin Kaepernick could be a casualty of the 49ers change of leadership and end up traded to another team. Like Griffin, Kaepernick had a stellar rookie year followed by a rather disappointing slump.
Jay Gruden and Snyder seem rather enamored of Kirk Cousins, but I could almost see a Bears-Broncos-esque trade with Kaepernick ending up in DC and Griffin taking up residence in Santa Clara. Stranger things have happened.
