The New York Jets just lost their starting quarterback Geno Smith to a broken jaw at the hands (or, rather, fist) of former teammate IK Enemkpali. That leaves lackluster and unreliable options in Ryan Fitzpatrick, Bryce Petty and Matt Flynn.

The New York Times reported yesterday that the Jets offense “showed a pulse” with Fitzpatrick at the helm against the New York Giants. That assessment makes backhanded compliments seem effusive, although this same article noted that Fitzpatrick outplayed Giants QB Eli Manning who still isn’t comfortable with his receivers (isn’t that his excuse for losing and scowling every single season?)

Unfortunately, many of the Jets best offensive assets, like Eric Decker fresh-from-the-Bears receiver Brandon Marshall, are stultified by the void at quarterback. Would Griffin be a better option than Fitzgerald? Perhaps. While he isn’t as mobile as he once was, he hasn’t really had a chance to play under a scheme designed for post-ACL-tear-Griffin.

The combination of the Jets, Rex Ryan, and Griffin would have been one of the most fabulously circusy triads in NFL history. Though Ryan has moved on to the Bills, the media circus could be too much of a distraction for a team trying to rebuild and gain credibility in their division and the league at large.
