The San Francisco 49ers have experienced a mass exodus of critical players during the off season and preseason this year. Linebacker Chris Borland unexpectedly announced his retirement, not due to active injuries, but fear of the wear and tear the sport was inflicting on his physical and neurological health. Shortly thereafter, Anthony Davis announced his allegedly temporary retirement for similar reasons.

Also having lost other critical players including running back Frank Gore, linebacker Patrick Willis, and defensive end Justin Smith, the 49ers were not in a position to hemorrhage even more valuable talent. That is exactly what happened, however. In early August, linebacker Aldon Smith was charged with driving under the influence and vandalism prompting his release from the team. That incident was the latest in a long string of off-field missteps and legal troubles.

Smith is not the only troubled linebacker. Last week, Ahmad Brooks was charged with misdemeanor sexual battery at which point the 49ers decided to excuse him from team activities. General Manager Trent Baalke explained the decision via CBS Sports, “We excused him from team activities to get on top of this. Obviously when you’re in a situation like this, it’s important that you get back to your family. It’s also important for him to start taking care of business on his end. And it’s our job to stay focused here on what we need to stay focused on.”
