Los Angeles Dodgers

The Los Angeles Dodgers remain one of the more interesting teams to watch as the September call-ups get announced. Not only do they have some of the game’s best prospects to play with, they also have some very real needs to fill heading down the stretch. Yes, the Dodgers are currently in first place and have an 80.7% chance of winning the division and an 82.5% chance for a postseason berth, but given their quality of play lately, a spark may not be the worst thing to come in the season’s final month.

Of course, some of that spark may come from players currently on rehab assignment. That includes second baseman Howie Kendrick. He’s an immediate upgrade over Chase Utley, who could be used to spell Adrian Gonzalez at first base or Justin Turner at third down the stretch. The Dodgers could also add more infield depth by promoting Jose Peraza.

Catching and bullpen help will also be at the forefront in Los Angeles. Catching prospect Austin Barnes has been a beast at Oklahoma City (albeit with the PCL caveat), hitting .320/.396/.489 with nine home runs and 42 RBI in just 79 games. With A.J. Ellis and Yasmani Grandal likely needing a breather, a third catcher could be a boon for a long playoff run. Likewise, giving some rest to the bullpen could prove prudent. Calling up Mike Bolsinger, Carlos Frias (DL), Joel Peralta (DL), and Adam Liberatore will give them some needed depth in the relief corps.

For those looking for the Dodgers to bring up top prospects Corey Seager and Julio Urias, I wouldn’t get my hopes up. Neither is on the 40-man roster and neither will be required to be added this winter. As such, there is no hurry to start their service clocks in September unless the goal is to get them everyday work. Seager may be ready for that role, but the Dodgers won’t move him unless they are convinced he could be a major upgrade over Jimmy Rollins for the final month. Even so, they’d have to have him on the 40-man by August 31st in order to make him postseason eligible.
