Philadelphia Phillies

The Philadelphia Phillies do win one prize for the 2015 season, but I’m sure it’s not the one they were wishing to take home when the season opened up. Now in complete rebuild phase, the Phillies are the proud owners of the league’s worst record and will likely carry that honor when they season closes. As such, they are in full-on experimentation mode and have nothing to lose by giving playing time to rookies and prospects.

That means veterans like Ryan Howard, Carlos Ruiz, Jerome Williams, and Aaron Harang. Yes the Phillies want to field a competitive team, but more important to the team’s future is to evaluate the talent that will make up that future. It will make them downright unwatchable at times, but it is a necessary evil.

Left-hander Jesse Biddle has fallen quite a bit in the prospect rankings after a rough go at Triple-A, but perhaps a promotion back to the big leagues will help him regain some confidence and put him in a good mindset for next season. The same could be said for right-hander David Buchanan.

The Phillies will also heavily rotate their infield options as well. Maikel Franco should return at some point in September, and the tandem of Cesar Hernandez and Darnell Sweeney will take advantage of Chase Utley being moved.

There is still a lack of higher level talent in the Phillies organization to make a big splash this season, but getting a look at what is currently cooking will give Philadelphia a sense of direction this winter now that they’ve cleared some payroll.
