Each MLB team’s expected call-ups for roster expansion
Texas Rangers
The Texas Rangers made a bold statement at the trade deadline by buying at the trade deadline, landing Cole Hamels and Jake Diekman from the Phillies, and picking up Sam Dyson from the Marlins. Considering they were seven games out of first place and three games behind for a Wild Card slot, it looked as though the Rangers were thinking forward to 2015.
They proved everyone wrong. Fast forward one month and Texas is now in command of the second Wild Card slot and just three games behind the rival Astros for the AL West crown. That run has put a different spin on things for the Rangers and they are one of a few teams that can add some significant fire power down the stretch.
Case in point, the deals mentioned above cost the Rangers a lot in prospects, but they were able to hang on to heavy hitters Joey Gallo and Nomar Mazara to fall back on. Gallo, with his home runs and strike-outs have already made their mark during a brief stint this season. However, Mazara would need to be added to the 40-man roster. With Josh Hamilton still unable to run, it may be prudent to slide him to the 60-day DL, ending his season and give Mazara his roster spot.
Additionally, the team could add some significant help to the bullpen. Hard-throwing Luke Jackson could make his way up, along with Tanner Scheppers, Spencer Patton, Nick Martinez, and Chi-Chi Gonzalez. Both Martinez and Gonzalez could also help give spot starts down the stretch. Left-hander Alex Claudio could also be a solid weapon in the season’s final month.
