Each MLB team’s expected call-ups for roster expansion
Cincinnati Reds
Nearing the non-waiver trade deadline, the Cincinnati Reds waffled over whether or not to sell. Granted, a lot of that indecision was due to the team wanting to keep its top players through the All-Star Game. There is nothing tougher to sell than a host team at the All-Star Game jettisoning its stars. Well just as soon as the All-Star Game was in the books, Cincinnati made its moves, first swapping ace Johnny Cueto and then flipping Mike Leake.
Since the trades went down, the Reds have slid from near .500 to being just four games ahead in the loss column over the lowly Phillies. Yup, times have gotten rough in Cincinnati.
That’s put the Reds into full-time evaluation mode. In particular Cincinnati has some serious work to do with their pitching staff and they’ll need figure out just what they have heading into 2016. With Homer Bailey likely not back until midseason after Tommy John, that means the Reds will be eager to get another look on Tony Cingrani and Brandon Finnegan for starters next season.
Likewise, the Reds could give a look at their top two prospects, outfielder Jesse Winkler and starter Robert Stephenson. Both appear ready and have earned a least a cup of coffee on the season. However, neither is on the 40-man roster. Cincinnati could clear two spots for them by placing Billy Hamilton and Brennan Boesch on the 60-day DL, as neither is expected back this season. Of the two, Stephenson is more likely, but Winkler could compete for a starting job in Spring Training, making getting an early look at him potentially worth Cincinnati’s while.
