Milwaukee Brewers

When rosters expand in September, there is perhaps no team that is deeper in evaluation mode than the Milwaukee Brewers. One of the season’s biggest disappointments, Milwaukee declared 2015 a lost season nearly immediately after coming out of the gate. After moving Carlos Gomez and Gerardo Parra at the trade deadline, and failing to unload either Matt Garza or Kyle Lohse during the non-waiver and waiver trade periods, Milwaukee will instead look to give some cups of coffee out to some prospects on the rise.

First and foremost in that group will be Zach Davies, who was acquired from Baltimore for Parra. Davies is the most advanced of the Brewers pitching prospects, featuring a solid three-pitch repertoire and excellent control. As expected, he’s struggled a bit while switching from the International League to the PCL, but he’s still worthy of a look down the stretch, especially if Davies is expected to contend for a rotation spot in February. However, he is not yet on the 40-man roster, which will necessitate another move to make room. With Lohse hitting free agency at the end of the season, it may not be a bad time to cut bait there.

Additionally, Milwaukee will add other depth pieces. Relievers Mike Strong, Preston Guilmet, Johnny Hellweg, and Tyler Wagner could all see some big league appearances in the season’s final month. Catcher Juan Centeno and infielders Matt Dominguez, Matt Clark, Yadiel Rivera, and Luis Sardinas could also find their way to Milwaukee in September.

However, don’t expect to see top prospects Orlando Arcia and Brett Phillips this fall. While both have climbed the prospect rankings and represent the future of the organization, neither is on the 40-man roster and as such, Milwaukee is in no hurry to start their service clocks too soon.
