St. Louis Cardinals

Sporting baseball’s best record in Major League Baseball nearly all season, the St. Louis Cardinals are a well-oiled machine of efficiency. As such, one would expect John Mozeliak and his staff to add only the pieces that will make them more dangerous heading into September. With a 4.5 game lead over the Pittsburgh Pirates in the NL Central, the Cardinals have some room to breathe, but also want to make sure they don’t push their luck with one of baseball’s best teams right behind them.

As such, St. Louis isn’t likely to make any move that directly affect the 40-man roster. Instead, they’ll promote off of it in hopes of adding players with some Major League experience to help during the stretch run. Primarily, that help will be called up to help rest a bullpen that the team has gotten a lot of work on in 2015. Relievers Mitch Harris, Michael Socolovich, and Sam Tuivailala have all seen time already in St. Louis this season and would likely be the first arms added on September first. Additionally, the team may give a look at starter prospect Marco Gonzalez, if for no other reason that to give him a few extra innings after the minor league season ends.

St. Louis also has an abundance of catchers on the 40-man roster, and with the playoffs approaching, giving some extra rest to Yadier Molina certainly would be a great idea. Michael Ohlman has been fantastic at Double-A Springfield and would certainly be worthy of a look. However, he’s yet to receive a look at the Major League level so the Cardinals may opt to instead use either Ed Easley or Cody Stanley as the team’s third catcher down the stretch.

Regardless of who they bring up, St. Louis is in a solid position heading into the postseason.
