Martinez had been one of the most consistent hitters in baseball for his career and he had become even more reliable in his older age.
V-Mart is a career .302 hitter, making this season’s performance that much more disappointing to think about. In 2015, Martinez is hitting a measly .236 with nine homers and 53 RBI.
The 36-year old designated hitter did miss about a month of play, but his average is the lowest, by a wide margin, of his career while his nine home runs and 53 RBI are the lowest since playing just 73 games in 2008.
Last year, Martinez was red-hot for the entire season, hitting a scorching .335 with 32 home runs and 103 RBI and producing his best overall season as a big leaguer.
It’s unclear whether the disappointing 2015 season is because of nagging injuries or just that he’s on his way toward the end of his career and his numbers have dipped accordingly. However, a 100-point dip in average doesn’t seem normal from one season to the next.
