Top 30 Cy Young Award Winners of all-time
By Jason Evans
11. Vida Blue 1971
MVP
24 wins
1.81 ERA
Like Dwight Gooden (more on him shortly), Vida Blue in 1971 didn’t have his ERA jump above 2.00 after his first start. Vida Blue had one of the great first halves of a season of all time, going 17-3 with a 1.42 ERA. In the second half, he only went 7-5, with a 2.40 ERA, but some of those losses were hard luck losses.
Blue’s 1.82 ERA led the American League. He won 24 games, which placed him second. He led the league in WHIP at 0.95. He was second in strikeouts with 301. His WAR was 8.6 which placed him third in the league and third among pitchers.
He led the league in FIP with 2.20 and WPA with 6.6. He only allowed six hits per nine innings.
Blue’s eight shutouts led the league and threw in over 300 innings. His ERA+ of 189 also led the league.
Not only did Blue win the Cy Young Award, but he was also given the MVP.
Blue would never win the Cy Young or MVP again, but he would win over 200 games and make multiple All-Star teams.
