Top 30 Cy Young Award Winners of all-time

7. Pedro Martinez 2000
18 wins
1.74 ERA
284 strikeouts
Pedro’s 1997 was awesome (go back a few slides in case you missed it), but his 2000 season is right up there with the best of all time. The Expos had to trade Pedro Martinez because he was getting too expensive for a team that just couldn’t afford to keep him.
The Expos traded him to the Red Sox after the 1997 season where Pedro dominated. 2000 was one of Pedro’s best season’s and one of the best since the Cy Young Award came about.
Pedro led all AL players in WAR at 11.7 a full win higher than Alex Rodriguez. He was 5.5 wins higher than the second ranked pitcher; Brad Radke.
Pedro led the league with 284 strikeouts and a 1.74 ERA. Martinez was fourth in wins with 18. His WHIP of 0.73 was also league leading. Pedro had four shutouts, which led the league, but also had seven complete games which was second.
Pedro’s FIP of 2.17 was over a point lower than the second place finisher. This was in a era of great offense and Pedro putting those kinds of numbers is astounding.
