21-3  2.90 ERA

214 innings pitched

240 strikeouts

0.97 WHIP

144 ERA+

They say a player’s prime is between 27-32 years of age. That’s when their skills are at their peak. Max Scherzer’s age 28 season puts him at number 28 on our list. Scherzer emerged in 2012 winning 16 games and leading the league in K/9 rate with 11.9.

Then came 2013, and Scherzer established himself as one of the best righties in the game today.

Scherzer won 21 games which led the majors.  Among AL pitchers, he was third win WAR at 6.7 and seventh overall. He was second in strikeouts with 240 and second in K/9 ratio. He was third in FIP and led the AL in Win Probability Added. He didn’t lose a game until July 13.

Scherzer took that success to the postseason, winning two games in the division series.

Scherzer has established himself as one of the best right-handers in the game. Maybe the best. He found himself once again having the most wins of any AL pitcher last season, and parlayed that into a record contract with the Washington Nationals.

Scherzer may not have his best win loss record this year, but his numbers are right on par with what he’s done throughout the past two seasons.
