Top 30 Cy Young Award Winners of all-time
By Jason Evans
23. Clayton Kershaw 2014
CY Young and MVP Winner
1.77 ERA
Our first repeat! Clayton Kershaw’s 2014 season comes in at 23 on our top 30. The guy was awesome last season, even if he missed some time with injury.
He lead all NL players in WAR with a 8.0. He wont 21 games and had a 1.77 ERA which gave him the NL lead for the fourth straight season. His WHIP of 0.85 was the best in the league. He missed the NL pitching triple crown by three strikeouts. Kershaw led the league with six complete games (Jim Hunter thinks that’s nothing).
His 1.81 FIP led the league as well and had a 5.3 WPA which also led the league.
He also threw a no-hitter against the Colorado Rockies where he struck out 15 and the only baserunner was on an error.
According to Game Score, it was the second best pitched game since 1914.
Add everything up, and Kershaw was the NL MVP for the first time in his career.
Kershaw may not have the sexy win-loss record this year, but his other numbers are right on par with what he’s done over the past few seasons. Even with that, he may not be able to keep the Cy Young Award, though it may go to his teammate instead.
