10 biggest MLB pitching disappointments of 2015
No. 8 Shane Greene
Last December, the Detroit Tigers acquired Shane Greene from the New York Yankees. At the time, Detroit believed that they had found a reliable, young arm that would contribute immediately.
"“We have four starters, and we feel comfortable going with a young guy with the fifth,” Tigers president and general manager Dave Dombrowski told the Detroit Free Press following the trade. “Now that young guy in the fifth becomes Shane Greene, so I think we’re set with our rotation at this point. We feel very comfortable with the five guys that we think gives us a chance to win.”"
Greene had shown promise months earlier during an abbreviated rookie campaign with the Yankees. He finished the year with a 3.78 ERA, averaging more than a strikeout per inning.
2015 has been a completely different story.
Greene had posted a 5.82 ERA before being sent down to Triple-A Toledo in June. When he returned to Detroit a month later, things got even worse.
He gave up 20 earned runs in 15.2 innings upon returning to the Tigers. His ERA swelled to 6.88, and his season in Detroit was over. The team demoted Green once again after just three starts and two relief appearances.
He struggled with injuries throughout the season as well, and two starts into his second stint in Toledo, Greene underwent season-ending surgery to fix an issue related to numbness in his pitching hand.
