If you are hitting the waiver wire week 3 looking for a fantasy defense there aren’t a ton of great options out there.  The teams that have been giving up the most fantasy points are either facing elite, widely-owned options or are playing each other which tends to let the air out of any great matchup.

Whenever there isn’t an A+ matchup to exploit, the best idea is to get the defense that has looked the best recently, and hope the matchup breaks in your favor. This week, the option I like the most is the Bengals whose defense has looked good in their first two games especially last week when they held Philip Rivers in check at home in Cincinnati.

In week 2, the Bengals forced three turnovers and only allowed 19 points to a San Diego offense that trashed the Lions in the second half of week 1.  This week, they’ll look to keep their momentum rolling as they head to Baltimore for what is always a tough divisional grudge match.

The Ravens offense put up big numbers against Oakland in week 2, but they really struggled in Denver in the opening week.  Since the Raiders defense has looked bad two weeks in a row, I think the Bengals will bring them back to earth and put up another solid week.  Baltimore has limited options in the passing game and really only Steve Smith Sr. is a weapon that the Bengals will need to focus on locking down.

Even though they’re not in the best matchup ever, the Bengals are the best widely available defense on the week 3 waiver wire, but if you want some alternative ideas check out my deep league pickups on the next slide.
