The Chicago Bears are struggling mightily so far this season, losing their first three games including Sunday’s humiliating loss against the Seahawks, 26-0. While the Bears defense is in dire straits, today’s NFL is a quarterback’s league, and Jay Cutler is not the man of the future for the franchise.

Michigan State Spartans quarterback Connor Cook is a plausible candidate as a first-overall pick, as he possesses a several attractive qualities. He plays in a pro-style system, has a good arm, and proven proven himself to be productive. So far this season, after four weeks, Cook has racked up 838 yards and nine touchdowns.

He ended his junior season with 3,214 yards and 24 touchdowns, an improvement over his sophomore campaign when he had 2,755 yards and 22 touchdowns. Steady improvement is a factor that makes Cook a possible first-overall pick for a team that needs a quarterback. Some have criticized his accuracy and consistency, but he has been a difference-maker for the Spartans. Cook has helped transform his school’s offense from liability to asset.

With the Bears likely yearning for the days of Lovie Smith, when a record of 10-6 was considered unacceptable, they need a new man at the helm who can help bring a winning tradition back to Soldier Field. If Cook is picked up the first round, he will be the first quarterback from the Big Ten drafted in the first round since Kerry Collins in 1995.
