OT. Oregon. Tyler Johnstone. 23. player. 124.

The Kansas City Chiefs offensive line is very young after losing players to injury and other personnel changes. The line has done surprising well, even against J.J. Watt and Vince Wilkfork of the Houston Texans. Still, a well-fortified line with adequate depth will be a key to future success.

Oregon’s Tyler Johnstone missed the entire 2014 season with an ACL injury, his second, and is entering the 2015 season after a year off the grid. Depending on the outcome of his 2015 season, Johnstone has enough talent, grit, and athelticism to attract the interest of NFL teams as a plausible first-round pick.

So far this season Johnstone has performed well, leading one of the highest-scoring offenses in the country. In Week 4, the Ducks were ambushed by a Utah squad that picked them apart on both sides of the ball. In the end, the offense could muster only 20 points. Though the offense’s collapse was not nearly as dramatic as the defense, which allowed 62 points.

A strong 2015 season could dispell any doubts about Johnstone’s durability and potential to succeed in the NFL. Should the offensive line fall apart, or Johnstone suffer yet another injury, teams will think twice before drafting the supremely talented tackle.

His physicality, well-honed technique, and intelligence could be just what the Kansas City Chiefs need to add a layer of security to their offensive line.
