. OT. Baylor. Shawn Oakman. 24. player. 30

The Jets might perform too well this season to be in contention for a worthwhile quarterback. Ryan Fitzpatrick has proven himself to be inconsistent, and Geno Smith was never a standout. Cardale Jones appeared to have much promise during the championship game, but has disappointed so far this season. He probably wouldn’t be an upgrade over the Jets current personnel.

The Jets could beef up their defense even more and turn it into a terrifying force much as the Rams have done with their front seven. The Jets were cruising along just fine until they faced off against the Eagles in Week 3. More depth at defense would provide more options for the unit, which was overwhelmed by the Eagles offense en route to their 24-17 loss.

At 6’8″ and 280 pounds Baylor defensive end Shawn Oakman has an intriguing skill set and a build that is appealing to NFL scouts and front offices. Unlike other defensive players in the draft, Oakman has solid balance and effective maneuvers both in coverage and against blockers.

He demonstrates his over-the-top athleticism here:

If you don’t know what you just watched, that’s Oakman doing a 40″ plyo box jump while holding 70-lb dumbells in each hand. Absurd.

One possible downside to Oakman is that he has a history of off-field troubles. While he has stayed focused since his move to Baylor, it is safe to say that scouts will be alert to potential red flags.
